Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

Proximity is a mobile application operated by [Join Proximity LLC] ("Proximity," "we," "us," or "our"), a limited liability company organized in the State of Florida, United States. Proximity helps people discover and connect with others who live near them for platonic, in-person friendship.

This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It applies to the Proximity iOS app, the website at joinproximity.app, and any related services (together, the "Service").

2. Information we collect

Information you give us

- Account information: your first name, mobile phone number, date of birth (to confirm you are 18 or older), and profile details such as a short bio and the interests or communities you select.

-Profile photo, if you choose to add one.

- Content you create: messages you send to other members, posts you make in the local feed, and reports or feedback you submit to us.

- Support and waitlist communications: your email address and the contents of any message you send us.

Information we collect automatically

- Location information, described in detail in Section 3.

- Device and technical information: device model, operating system version, app version, language, time zone, and a device identifier used to deliver push notifications.

- Usage information: features you use, communities you join, screens you visit, and general activity within the app, along with the dates and times of that activity.

- Log and diagnostic information: IP address, crash reports, and error logs used to keep the Service working.

Information from others

- Reports from other members about your conduct, which we use to enforce our Terms of Service and keep the community safe.

- Apple, which confirms your App Store transaction status if you purchase anything, without giving us your payment card details.

3. Location information

Proximity is built around distance, so location is central to how it works — and we've tried to collect as little of it as the product allows.

With your permission, the app collects your device's location so we can show you members who are near you and order results by distance. You grant this permission through your iOS settings, and you can change or revoke it at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Proximity.

What other members see. Other members never see your precise coordinates, your address, or a live map of where you are. They see only an approximate distance from themselves to you, rounded to reduce precision, and any general area name you have chosen to display on your profile.

What we store. We store your most recent approximate location so distance sorting works when you open the app. We do not build or retain a continuous history of your movements, and we do not track your location while the app is closed.

If you decline. You can use parts of Proximity without granting location access, but distance-based discovery — the core of the app — will not function.

4. How we use information

We use the information described above to:

- Create and maintain your account and verify that you are a real person with a working phone number;
- Show you nearby members and communities, and order them by approximate distance;
- Enable matching, messaging, and the local feed;
- Send you notifications you have asked for, by push or text message;
- Respond to your questions and provide customer support;
- Investigate reports, detect fraud and abuse, and enforce our Terms of Service;
- Understand how the Service is used so we can fix problems and improve it;
- Comply with legal obligations and protect the rights and safety of our members, the public, and Proximity.

5. Text messages (SMS)

If you provide your mobile number and opt in, we send text messages through our messaging provider. This includes one-time verification codes, security alerts, and — if you enable them — notifications about matches, messages, and community activity. Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.

You may opt out at any time by replying STOP to any message from us. Reply HELP for help, or email support@joinproximity.app.

No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Information sharing with subcontractors who provide support services, such as message delivery and customer service, is permitted. All other use case categories exclude text messaging originator opt-in data and consent; this information will not be shared with any third parties.

6. How we share information

With other members
Your first name, profile details, profile photo if you add one, approximate distance, and anything you post or send are visible to the members the Service shows them to. Anything you post in the local feed can be seen by other members with access to that feed. Treat it as public within the community.

With service providers
We share information with companies that operate parts of the Service on our behalf, under contracts that limit what they may do with it. These include:
Supabase — database and account infrastructure;
Twilio — delivery of text messages and verification codes;
Apple — app distribution and push notification delivery;
Analytics and crash reporting providers — diagnosing errors and understanding aggregate usage.

For legal and safety reasons
We may disclose information if we believe in good faith that it is reasonably necessary to comply with a law, regulation, subpoena, or court order; to enforce our Terms of Service; to detect or address fraud or security issues; or to protect the rights, property, or safety of our members, the public, or Proximity.

In a business transfer
If Proximity is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, member information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your information becomes subject to a materially different privacy policy.

7. We do not sell your data

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not sell or rent your phone number, your location, or your messages to anyone.

8. How long we keep information

We keep your account information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete or de-identify your personal information within 30 days, except where we must keep it longer to comply with a legal obligation, resolve a dispute, or enforce our agreements — for example, records of a safety report or a banned account, which we retain to prevent the person from returning.

Messages you have sent to another member may remain visible in that member's copy of the conversation.

9. Your choices and rights

- Location: grant, limit, or revoke location access in your iOS settings at any time.
- Notifications: turn push and text notifications on or off in the app under Settings → Notifications, or reply STOP to any text.
- Profile: edit or remove your profile details and photo at any time in the app.
- Access, correction, and deletion: request a copy of the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it by emailing privacy@joinproximity.app.

We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.

10. Deleting your account

You can delete your Proximity account directly in the app under Settings → Account → Delete Account. Deleting your account removes your profile from discovery immediately and begins the deletion process described in Section 8. If you cannot access the app, email privacy@joinproximity.app from the address associated with your account and we will process the request.

11. Security

We protect information in transit with TLS encryption, restrict internal access to member data to the people who need it, and rely on infrastructure providers that maintain industry-standard security practices. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If we become aware of a breach affecting your personal information, we will notify you as required by applicable law.

12. Children

Proximity is intended for adults. You must be at least 18 years old to use the Service. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have collected information from a person under 18, we will delete the account and the associated information. If you believe a minor is using Proximity, contact us at privacy@joinproximity.app.

13. U.S. state privacy rights

Depending on where you live, state law may give you the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, to request access to it or a portable copy, to request correction or deletion, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information or of targeted advertising. As stated in Section 7, we do not sell or share personal information for those purposes.

To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@joinproximity.app. We will verify your request using the phone number or email address associated with your account and respond within the time period required by law. You may use an authorized agent to submit a request on your behalf, and you may appeal a decision by replying to our response.

14. Where we operate

Proximity is operated from the United States and is currently offered only in the United States. If you access the Service from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to, stored in, and processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those in your country.

15. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. If the changes are material, we will give you notice in the app or by text or email before they take effect. Continuing to use the Service after a change takes effect means you accept the updated policy.
